Robert J. “Bob” Chambers (1930 - 2016)

Early Sunday morning, Bob Chambers began his last and final ski run. True to form, he was on the first chair up and didn’t hesitate to tear off and make first tracks. But then he never was one to hesitate much.

Bob was born in Jackson Hole to early homesteaders, and grew up surrounded by stout & tireless ranchers & trappers. His family later moved to Ogden where he became a key member of the Ogden High School ski team, winning both the coveted Knudsen Cup and the 1948 State Championships.

Bob was an instructor for the U.S. Army’s Mountain & Cold Weather Training Command at Camp Hale, CO, and was the All-Army Ski Champion. Later at the University of Wyoming, he was captain of the ski team, and won the NCAA 4-way Championship.

Bob returned to Ogden and founded Alpine Sports in 1955, which continues today as Utah’s oldest family-owned ski shop. He proudly led Alpine Sports, serving generations of skiers, and gave countless teens their first real jobs. Bob was also a founding member of the Mt. Ogden Ski Club and was the founder & director of the All Air Force Championship Ski Races.

Bob was always eager to help those with challenges. He built ski outriggers for an amputee, taught a young girl with a prosthetic leg to ski, and helped found the first ski swap in northern Utah, and later turned it over to the Utah Handicapped Skiers Assn.

After 40 years he retired and resumed ski racing. He won more than 60 first-place finishes in Masters Racing. Bob’s greatest honor was in 2002, as a torch-bearer for the Winter Olympics.

If your life has been touched by Bob, please join us in a memorial gathering, Sunday, Nov 13th, 1-5pm, at Alpine Sports. Come share your favorite story or memory of Bob (open mic at 2pm), but sorry, no returns on those boots he sold you back in 1978.

And to Bob, we wish you Godspeed on your final and greatest ski run of all.

David CookI grew up 3 houses down from Alpine. I was the little kid that was hanging around the shop dreaming of someday being able to own the really cool ski equipment on display. One day Bob and Jim offered me a job cleaning the store at night. I was a 12 year old paper boy. Later they promoted me to the shop. It was indeed my first real job for 5 years. I learned so much. Bob was always so kind to me. He taught me skills that I continue to use, know your stuff, show every customer you are interested in them and never try and over sell a customer. When I was ski racing he always asked me about my races and took the time to talk about racing technique. One year when the Air force had their ski championship at The Basin he arranged for me to be a post runner on he downhill course, one of the great thrills of my life. Thank you Bob for taking time and interest in a shy 12 year old neighborhood kid and blessing my life. Rest In Peace3 weeks ago   ·  3
